The International Day of Charity, established by the United Nations in 2012 and observed annually on 5 September, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of selflessness, compassion, and solidarity. Commemorating the passing of Mother Teresa, the day aims to sensitise and mobilise people, NGOs, and stakeholders worldwide to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. In the direct selling industry, community and human connection are cornerstones of success. This fundamentally people-centric model naturally extends into philanthropy, as companies and their vast networks of independent sellers continuously strive to uplift the communities where they live and work.

Seldia Members have a long, proud history of supporting charitable causes. By leveraging their global reach and mobilising their dedicated networks, these organisations address pressing social and environmental issues worldwide. Whether it is fighting food insecurity, investing in youth welfare, or preserving vital natural resources, the direct selling sector understands the profound responsibility of giving back.

Here are three powerful examples of how Seldia Members are making a tangible difference to mark this International Day of Charity:

Empowering Local Communities: Amway's Global Volunteer Initiative

Amway’s approach to charity is deeply rooted in active community engagement and hands-on volunteerism.

  • Held from 4 to 6 August in West Michigan, and extending for several weeks globally, more than 1,300 Amway employees volunteered across 12 different countries.

  • Together, they contributed over 7,000 hours of service and supported more than 60 community organisations.

  • These local projects focused primarily on addressing food insecurity, improving access to fresh food, and creating safe, welcoming spaces for children and families.

  • What makes this initiative particularly meaningful is its ability to bring together employees from different cultures and communities around a shared purpose: making a positive impact where they live and work.

  • While activities varied according to local needs, they all shared the exact same goal of strengthening communities and helping people live better lives.

Supporting Children Globally: The Herbalife Family Foundation

The Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) demonstrates a profound, long-term commitment to youth welfare on an international scale.

  • Founded in 1994, HFF has expanded its reach to span 62 countries.

  • The foundation actively partners with 170 organisations to help over 200,000 children annually.

  • Looking to the future, HFF has made a monumental commitment to investing $100 million by the year 2030.

  • Last year alone, the foundation awarded nearly $1.2 million in grants to 30 non-profit organisations specifically across Europe and Africa.

Protecting Our Waterways: Coral Club's Environmental Action

Coral Club aligns its charitable efforts directly with UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, focusing its resources on practical, global water challenges such as safe drinking access, coastal conservation, and marine waste removal.

  • Through targeted projects, the organisation mobilised volunteers to collect over 100kg of waste along Poland’s Baltic coast.

  • They supported three rural well projects in Sierra Leone to provide vital clean water and sanitation training.

  • Through a partnership with 4ocean, Coral Club removed more than 4.5 tonnes of plastic from marine environments in Hawaii, Guatemala, and Indonesia.

  • Together, these efforts demonstrate an interconnected strategy that addresses both direct human access to water and the preservation of crucial aquatic ecosystems.

Driving Meaningful Change Together

The direct selling sector consistently proves that when businesses prioritise people and the planet, the positive ripple effects are virtually limitless. The statistics and stories from Amway, Herbalife, and Coral Club are just a snapshot of the wider industry's commitment to creating a fairer, healthier, and more supportive world.

As we mark the International Day of Charity, we celebrate the spirit of generosity that defines the direct selling community. It is a powerful reminder that while we can achieve success individually, we make our greatest impact collect
